Robredo, who personally made a series of inspections in Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Albay provinces last week, said local officials do not have the capacity to build big infrastructure projects, thus, the need for the national government to make such programs.

“Iyong pag-invest talaga (ang kailangan) sa mga infrastructure na nakaka-mitigate ng epekto ng disasters,” she said during her radio show Sunday.

“Siguro iyong pinakakailangan ngayon, iyong coordination ng national sa local kung ano iyong mga klase ng infrastructure na kailangan,” she added.

“Despite the political noise and the baseless attacks against me and our office, seeing the faces of those in need in the poorest, farthest, and smallest communities is precisely what keeps me going,” she said. “We need to do everything we can to uplift the lives of our people.”

Robredo shared some of her experiences as Vice President, from transforming her office into an advocacy-driven one to improve the lives of poor Filipinos and empower them, to taking on the challenge of being co-chair of the Inter-agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD).

Bills Authored

Rep. Leni Robredo (3rd District, Camarines Sur) vowed to push for the passage of a bill declaring as non criminal act the mere possession of three bullets in their belongings while boarding a plane, ship or any public utility vehicle. Among those affected by the alleged "tanim bala" scheme at the airport are foreigners who were on their way to local or international destinations.

The scheme has affected the country's tourism, as shown by the drop in the number of tourist who are expected to visit the country, Robredo said.

Under Robredo's bill, the mere possession of three bullets shall not constitute as a criminalize offense.

Covid-19 Response

Since the pandemic started, Robredo has provided insights on how the government can manage the health crisis, but government officials have just brushed her suggestions aside.

Despite the many programs that the Office of the Vice President (OVP) has, Robredo has no official mandate in the COVID-19 response.

If ever she would be appointed to any position concerning the COVID-19 response, it would be Robredo’s third cabinet stint after short tenures over the Housing sector and the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs. But in terms of frustrations, Robredo also said that the fact that possible corruption may have occurred in the government’s transactions for the COVID-19 pandemic is very frustrating in itself, as Filipinos have been enduring and dealing with the shortage of funds in terms of health workers’ benefits and social aid.

Covid-19 Response

A year and a half into the pandemic, she says, it seems that the government hasn’t learned its lesson from past surges as it has been very dependent on lockdowns – perhaps given that officials still don’t grasp the severity of the situation.

“Lockdown tayo nang lockdown, dapat ‘pag nagla-lockdown, hindi siya ‘yong end, ‘yong lockdown is only a means […] (para) ma-expand mo ‘yong hospital capacity, ma-strengthen mo ‘yong healthcare system. Pero one an half years na tayo eh. Parang roller-coaster lang, bumabalik-balik lang tayo,” Robredo said.

Covid-19 Response

MANILA— Vice President Leni Robredo on Saturday said her office has prepared and sent out COVID-19 "care kits" to virus patients using the online consultation platform launched by her office, as most do not have medicine and supplies.

In a Facebook post, Robredo said they did not expect the high number of teleconsultations through her office's Bayanihan E-konsulta 2 days ago, which led them to do "overwhelming" tasks.

Bayanihan E-Konsulta offers medical consultations for free via Facebook Messenger.

The Office of the Vice President also recently rolled out a community testing project called the Swab Cab. Using donated antigen kits, the program was able to test about 1,300 individuals in Malabon, where it was first mounted.

Covid-19 Response

Vice President Leni Robredo said her team would revise their approach in helping communities reduce the coronavirus transmission following recommendations from health workers online.

On Saturday, Robredo announced an initiative called “SWAB CAB,” a free mobile testing program for communities with high rates COVID-19 transmission.

“We’re launching SWAB CAB, a mobile testing program which will do mass surveillance testing in communities where transmission is very high,” she said.

Her office partnered with the local government of Malabon City, the pilot area, Ube Express and Kaya Natin Movement.
